The Prized Delight: Exploring Kurma Mabroom in Malaysia

Buah kurma

Ask people at a Hari Raya open house which date they just ate and most will say "kurma" and leave it there. Mabroom is one of the few they tend to remember, because it does not look like the others. It is long and thin, reddish-brown, and it has a chewy, semi-dry bite. This page looks at Kurma Mabroom from the buying side: which occasions it suits, how much to get and what to check before you pay. If you want to see how it is sold, the Kurma Mabroom Malaysia range is one example.

Where Mabroom comes from

Mabroom grows in the Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. Like every date sold here it is imported, since Malaysia has no commercial date farms. That makes the label the thing to read. It should name the variety, give Saudi Arabia as the country of origin and show who imported it.

A date's look varies by batch, so do not treat colour or shape as proof of anything. If the box does not say Mabroom and Saudi Arabia, ask the seller.

Which occasions it suits

Because Mabroom is semi-dry, it keeps its shape and does not glue itself to the next date in the box. That matters more than people think.

For hantaran trays, a date that stays neat on the way to the bride's house is easier to work with than a soft one that sags. For umrah gifts handed out after the trip, small packs of a semi-dry date survive being passed around in a bag for a few days. For an open-house plate, its length gives the plate some contrast next to round, near-black Ajwa or a dark Safawi. Our page on Kurma Safawi describes that one if you want to put both out.

For breaking fast at home during Ramadan, it comes down to taste. Some families like the chew, others want something soft like Medjool or Mazafati. Buy a small pack before you commit.

How much to buy

There is no standard count of dates per kilo, since it depends on the importer's size grade, so plan by weight and by how the dates will be served. A few practical points:

  • For an open house, a mixed plate goes further than one variety, so Mabroom can be a share of the order rather than all of it.
  • For hantaran or door gifts, ask the seller for small packs of a fixed net weight. Repacking a carton at home takes longer than you expect.
  • For a kenduri or a mosque iftar, buying by the carton usually brings the price per kilo down. Our guide to buying kurma in bulk and pricing covers how that works.

When to order

Demand peaks in the weeks before and during Ramadan, and again for Hari Raya, the wedding season, kenduri and umrah season. New-season stock from the Gulf is harvested roughly between late summer and autumn and reaches Malaysia some weeks later. In practice, orders placed a month before Ramadan get better choice than orders placed in the first week of it. The pattern is laid out in our post on festive demand for dates.

What to check before you pay

Grades like A, AA or Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting. They are not an international standard. One seller's Jumbo can be another seller's AA, so compare price per kilo and net weight rather than the grade name. Get the variety, origin and weight in writing on the quote. If you are ordering online, check how the parcel is packed and when it will arrive. A full checklist for choosing a seller is in our guide to buying good-quality kurma.

If you would rather not put a plate together yourself, you can find beautifully arranged platters of dates online. Ask which varieties are inside. "Assorted" on its own tells you nothing.

Keeping it after it arrives

An opened pack keeps well in an airtight container in a cool, dry cupboard. If the kitchen gets hot, or you have a carton that will last weeks, move it to the fridge and take out what you need a little before serving.
