Versatility of Dates in Malaysian Cuisine (Harga Kurma Included!)

harga kurma

An open house platter built around dates looks more thought-out than a plain bowl of kuih, and it costs less than it looks like it did. Harga kurma for platter-grade dates sits well within a normal snack budget if you buy mid-range varieties and save the Medjool for the centre of the plate rather than filling the whole tray with it.

Building the platter in layers, not one variety

Start with a firmer, cheaper variety spread across the base of the tray — this is the volume that gets eaten first. Add two or three Medjool or Ajwa dates arranged in the centre as the visual centrepiece; guests notice the presentation before they notice how much of the tray is actually premium stock. Scatter a few whole almonds or walnuts between the dates so the tray doesn't read as "just dates."

Pairing dates with what's already on the table

Dates sit well next to soft cheese, especially something mild like cream cheese or a local cream-based dip — the saltiness balances the sweetness without needing anything else added. They also work stuffed with a whole almond or cashew, which turns a plain date into something that looks deliberately prepared rather than opened straight from the box. Avoid putting dates next to anything already very sweet, like kuih lapis or dodol — the flavours compete instead of complementing each other.

What doesn't work on a platter

Very soft, sticky varieties fall apart under tongs and make a mess of the tray within the first hour — the same reason a softer Medjool loses out to firmer dried fruit on a tray meant to sit out for hours. Fresh, moist dates are better eaten straight rather than left sitting out for guests to pick at over several hours — they don't hold their texture as long as fully dried varieties once exposed to room air.

How much to buy for how many guests

For an open house with steady foot traffic through the day, plan roughly 80-100g of dates per ten guests on the platter itself, plus a backup box in the kitchen — trays get refilled more than people expect once word gets around that there's a good spread. Buying online ahead of the visiting season avoids the last-minute scramble when local stalls run low on the better varieties closer to Hari Raya.

Keeping it simple

A good open house tray doesn't need five varieties — one everyday date for volume, one premium date for the centre, and something salty or nutty alongside covers most of what guests actually notice.
