Harga Kurma Di Malaysia

What actually moves the price of dates in Malaysia

Ask five stallholders in a pasar malam what a kilo of kurma should cost and you will get five different answers. That is not because someone is cheating you — date prices in Malaysia genuinely move for a handful of concrete reasons, and knowing them makes you a better buyer whether you are stocking up before Ramadan or just want a snack that will not go soft in the fridge.

Grade and variety set the floor

Ajwa from Madinah, Medjool from Palestine or Jordan, Mariami and Piarom from Iran, Deglet Noor from Tunisia and Algeria — each variety carries its own baseline cost before a single ringgit of markup is added. Sourcing dates in the Malaysian market means dealing with several of these origins at once, and a supplier who only stocks one variety will always look either cheap or expensive next to someone who carries the full range. Within a single variety, grading (A, AA, AAA, jumbo) adds another layer: fewer blemishes and larger fruit push the price up even when the origin is identical.

Ramadan and Eid do the rest

Demand for kurma in Malaysia is not flat across the year. It spikes hard in the weeks before Ramadan and again before Eid, and suppliers who import on fixed schedules cannot always scale up fast enough to match it. That mismatch between a seasonal spike and a slower supply chain is a big reason the same box of dates can cost noticeably more in March than it does in September.

What is happening on the way in

Dates sold here are almost all imported, so import duties, freight rates and the ringgit's exchange rate against the US dollar or the Gulf currencies all sit inside the final price before it ever reaches a shelf. Understanding how the supply of dates moves through the market explains why a weaker ringgit or a shipping delay at the port can push prices up for weeks, even when nothing about the dates themselves has changed.

How to actually compare prices

Price per kilo alone tells you very little. A cheap price on a lower grade of Deglet Noor is not automatically worse value than an expensive Medjool — it depends what you are buying it for. Daily snacking calls for something sweet and inexpensive; hantaran and gifting calls for the large, glossy grades that cost more precisely because they look and taste the part. If you want to see how this plays out for one specific variety, the piece on Medjool date pricing breaks down why that one commands a premium, and our roundup of Malaysian and imported kurma is a useful starting point if you are still deciding which variety suits your household or your stall.
