What Meals Have Calcium – Find Out What Meals Have Calcium By Studying This Article

Most calcium advice starts with a glass of milk. That leaves out anyone who skips dairy, by habit or by taste. This article builds meals that carry real calcium without milk, cheese or yoghurt. It uses the NHS daily figure and the per-100g values in the USDA FoodData Central database, and it is honest about how small a part dates play.

The target and where the NHS points

The NHS says adults aged 19 to 64 and over need 700mg of calcium a day, and that you should be able to get all of it from your daily diet. Its list of sources includes milk, cheese and other dairy foods. It also lists foods that are not dairy: green leafy vegetables such as curly kale and okra, but not spinach; soya drinks with added calcium; bread and anything made with fortified flour; and fish where you eat the bones, such as sardines and pilchards.

Spinach is left off because, as the page explains, it does contain high levels of calcium but the body cannot digest it all. Every meal below leaves it out.

Four dairy-free meals, counted

Each figure is the FoodData Central value per 100g, scaled to the portion. All the records used are SR Legacy entries last updated in 2019.

Soya drink with chopped Medjool

Unsweetened soymilk with added calcium is listed at 124mg per 100g. A 250g glass gives about 310mg. Eat 30g of chopped Medjool with it and you add roughly 19mg, since Medjool carries 64mg per 100g. Total: about 329mg.

Tofu and okra stir-fry

Firm tofu prepared with calcium sulfate has the highest figure of any food in this article, 683mg per 100g. That number belongs to tofu set with calcium sulfate, so check the pack for it. A 100g block with 100g of okra (82mg per 100g) comes to about 765mg. One plate covers the whole 700mg.

Kale and tahini salad with Deglet Noor

Raw kale is 254mg per 100g, so 80g gives about 203mg. A 15g spoon of tahini, at 426mg per 100g, adds about 64mg. Slice 30g of Deglet Noor through it, the golden, semi-dry date from Tunisia and Algeria, and you add another 12mg or so, because Deglet Noor sits at 39mg per 100g. Total: about 279mg.

Sardines on toast

Atlantic sardines canned in oil, drained and eaten with the bone, are 382mg per 100g. Put 80g of them on 50g of white bread (144mg per 100g) and the plate holds about 306mg plus 72mg, or roughly 378mg.

Putting two meals together

The tofu stir-fry reaches 700mg alone. Everything else needs a partner. The soya breakfast plus sardines on toast comes to about 707mg. The salad plus the sardines lands near 656mg, a little short, which a handful of almonds would close: 20g of almonds at 269mg per 100g adds about 54mg.

Every combination here stays under the 1,500mg a day that the NHS calls a high dose. It says taking high doses of calcium, more than 1,500mg a day, could lead to stomach pain and diarrhoea. Even the soya breakfast and the tofu dinner together come to about 1,094mg.

What the dates are doing in these meals

Not much for calcium. 30g of Medjool gives under 3% of the 700mg, and 30g of Deglet Noor gives under 2%. They are in these meals for taste. The NHS also counts a 30g portion of dried fruit, dates included, as 1 of your 5 A Day, and says it should be eaten at mealtimes, not as a snack between meals, to reduce the impact on teeth. That is why each date above sits inside a meal.
