Organic dates wholesale in Malaysia starts with one plain fact about where the fruit comes from.
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade so every date sold here is imported.
That means any organic claim on a carton here starts with an orchard in another country.
Instead of the orchard you have the paper and the print on the box to go on before you pay for a whole order.
Follow the paper from palm to carton
The EU explains that its organic logo can only be used on products certified as organic by an authorised control agency or body. The same page says this means the products met strict conditions on how they were produced, processed, transported and stored.
Read that list again with a carton of dates in mind.
Under the EU scheme the orchard is only the first step and the packing and the shipping are covered too.
So when a supplier shows you a certificate, look at whose name is on it. If it names a grower, ask whether the company that packed the box you are buying holds its own certificate too.
What the EU organic logo tells you
If a carton carries the EU organic logo, read it closely. Under the EU rules the logo can only be used when a product contains at least 95% organic ingredients. Plain whole dates are a single ingredient, so the rule matters more for date paste, stuffed dates and snack mixes.
Two small lines printed next to the logo do most of the work for a buyer. One is the code number of the control body. The other states whether the raw materials were farmed in EU agriculture or non-EU agriculture.
Inside the EU the logo is compulsory on pre-packaged organic food produced and sold there. On imported products it is optional and can be used where the product conforms to the EU rules on the import of organic goods.
What a USDA label tells you
The USDA rules note that most raw, unprocessed or minimally processed farm crops can be labelled "100 percent organic". A product sold as "made with organic" needs at least 70 percent organic ingredients and must not carry the USDA organic seal anywhere.
The National Organic Program links its Organic Integrity Database as the place to check the certification status of organic farms and businesses. Search it for the name printed on the certificate you were shown.
What the research says about organic food and health
Here the research is clear and quite modest.
A 2009 systematic review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that, on the basis of studies of satisfactory quality, there is no evidence of a difference in nutrient quality between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs. A 2012 review in the Annals of Internal Medicine added that eating organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues.
So buy organic dates for the farming rules behind them and not on a promise of extra nutrients.

Matching the variety to the buyer
The word organic belongs to a certified lot and never to a variety name.
Ajwa comes from Madinah in Saudi Arabia and is small, roundish and near-black with a soft bite. Sukari comes from Al-Qassim and is golden-amber and very sweet, sold soft as rutab or drier. Deglet Noor comes from Tunisia and Algeria and is golden, translucent and semi-dry. In Malaysia it is called kurma tangkai when it is sold on the stem.
Soft dates also need the right storage. Mazafati from Bam in Iran needs refrigeration and is cold-stored so it can be sold year-round. For a closer look at soft fruit, the post on judging Medjool ripeness by eye and touch is a useful companion.
When to place a wholesale order
Demand in Malaysia peaks before and during Ramadan.
Hari Raya is another peak along with weddings and kenduri and umrah gifts.
Gulf and Middle-East dates are mostly harvested from late summer to autumn. New-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks later, and that is the moment to ask for the certificate covering the new lot. Grades such as A, AA and Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, so compare grades within one supplier only.
