Junk Food – 5 Healthy And Delicious Substitutes

A kid's birthday party table is usually candy, cupcakes, chips and a two-litre bottle of soda. Parents don't need to ban all of it. Swapping one or two items for something better still leaves a table full of treats, and the kids rarely notice the difference until they're older.

Candy bowl → stuffed dates

A bowl of wrapped candy sits on almost every party table because it's easy: no prep, no mess. Pitted dates stuffed with a peanut or a piece of dried apricot take five minutes to arrange on a plate and look just as festive. They're sweet enough that kids reach for them without being told to.

Chips → popcorn or banana chips

Plain popcorn tossed with a little sea salt costs less than a family-size bag of chips and disappears just as fast at a party. Banana chips work too if you want something with more crunch. Both come without the deep-fried oil that soaks through a paper plate by the end of the afternoon.

Soda → fruit-and-date infused water

A jug of water with sliced dates, orange and mint sitting in the fridge for an hour picks up a light sweetness without any added sugar. Kids drink it because it's cold and it's in a fun jug, not because it's "healthy" — nobody needs to announce that part.

Cupcakes → a mixed fruit platter with a date dip

Cut watermelon, grapes and apple slices on a platter next to a small bowl of blended dates and yoghurt turns into a dip station. It won't replace the cake — nothing does — but it gives the table something other than sugar-on-sugar for kids who've already had two cupcakes.

Party bags → a small box of dates instead of extra sweets

Instead of stuffing the goodie bag with more candy, a small box of dates or a date-and-nut mix works as a "grown-up" alternative that a lot of parents will actually thank you for. It travels well and doesn't melt in a hot car on the way home.

None of these swaps mean throwing out the candy bowl entirely — it's still a birthday party. Picking two or three from this list is enough to balance the table without anyone feeling like they missed out on cake.
