A protein bar at RM8 and a handful of dates and almonds at a fraction of that price both get called "healthy energy snacks." They're not interchangeable, and the price gap isn't proof either way — so what's actually different between them?
Read past the front-of-pack protein number
Most bars lead with a big protein number on the wrapper. Flip it over and a chunk of that bar is often glucose syrup, palm oil, and a sugar alcohol to hit a "low sugar" claim while keeping it sweet. None of that is dangerous in a snack, but it's also not the health story the front of the pack is telling.
What a date-and-nut mix actually contains
Three or four dates with a small handful of almonds or cashews gives you natural sugar plus fibre from the dates, and fat and a bit of protein from the nuts. The ingredient list is two items you could name yourself, which isn't automatically better than a bar — but it's a lot easier to know exactly what you're eating.
Where the bar wins
Shelf life away from a fridge, no stickiness in a bag, and a fixed calorie count printed for people tracking intake precisely. If you need a snack that survives a hot car or a gym bag for a week, a sealed bar has a practical edge a date-and-nut mix in a sandwich bag doesn't.
Where the date mix wins
Cost, mainly — buying dates in bulk brings the per-serving price down well below a branded bar, and it stays true whether you're stocking a home pantry or a small kiosk. The Selangor and Klang Valley traders buying kurma wholesale for resale are already doing this maths — a RM31/kg grade compares very differently to a bar priced per unit once you work it out per 100g.
The honest answer
Neither is automatically "healthier." A bar is convenience with a fixed nutrition label; a date-and-nut mix is cheaper and simpler with less fibre-and-sugar processing behind it. Pick based on what you actually need the snack to do. Green Diamond sells the graded whole dates this comparison is built on, and our buying guide covers what separates one grade from the next if price-per-kg is what you're weighing up.
