Five things worth always having in the cupboard, in the order they get used up.
1. A plain grain
Rice or oats, nothing pre-flavoured. It's the base of most meals here and the one item that, if it runs out, actually derails dinner.
2. Tinned legumes
Chickpeas or beans, three or four tins deep. They go from tin to table in the time it takes to boil rice, no soaking, no planning ahead.
3. A shelf-stable sweet snack
This slot is where dates go. No fridge required, no short shelf life, and a small handful is a fixed portion rather than an open packet that keeps calling. A firmer grade lasts longest at room temperature if the cupboard runs warm.
4. One good cooking oil
Just one. A second and third bottle usually means two of them go rancid before they're used up.
5. A spice you'll actually reach for
Not the whole rack — one or two that go into most of what gets cooked that month. Cumin or curry powder covers a lot of ground on their own.
The part that keeps it working
None of the five above matter if the cupboard only gets checked once it's already empty. A quick look before the weekly shop — what's low, what's full — is what turns this from a one-off stock-up into something that actually holds.
