Not every dry fruit works for every purpose. What goes into a hampers box isn't what you'd reach for on a Tuesday afternoon, and what you'd bake with isn't either. Here's how to match the fruit to the use.
For everyday snacking: Zahedi
Zahedi dates are firmer and less sticky than the softer varieties, which makes them easy to keep loose in a jar on the counter without everything clumping together. Mild sweetness, not overwhelming, the kind you can eat three or four of without it feeling like dessert.
For gifting or hampers: Mabroom or Medjool
Presentation matters here. Mabroom's long shape and dark caramel colour photographs well and looks deliberate in a box. Medjool is softer and richer, closer to a confection, which is exactly why it reads as a premium gift rather than a pantry staple.
For baking: whichever is cheapest per kilo, chopped
Once a date is chopped into a cake batter or a energy bar mix, the visual differences between varieties disappear and only the sweetness matters. This is where Zahedi's lower price per kilo makes the most sense, no reason to pay Medjool prices for fruit that's getting blended anyway.
Storage, whichever you pick
Keep the bag's ventilation holes clear, or poke your own if it arrived sealed, this stops the fruit sweating and sticking into one block. For anything you're not using within a few weeks, an airtight container in the freezer holds the texture far longer than leaving it in the pantry.
